Yo-Yo’s, Y’all…….. “Upcycled” Totes & Purses.

The weekend has officially started! Just look at what you could create! All four projects are easy and fast! Check them out:  Below, I found my favorite color of green in a tote bag. The logo on the front had to go. I washed the bag (it was $1.00) and pulled out my favorite Kaffe Fassett green Millefiori  fabric.  I stitched up a pocket, whirrrr….. and topstitched it to the front of the outside pocket.  I have already filled it with a stuff for a new project. Yes!

Time out for a trip (early morning) to my little garden. YIKES! It has been sooooo hot for sooooo long! We are looking at 30+ days with 90+ weather. Very meager pickings as the plants are stressed. Except for my Basil and Thai Basil. This tiny bit of Basil, the fresh fragrance, filled the laundry room where I set the basket down. On to project #2.

Apologies, the color is off (battery running really low). It’s time for the traveling Yo-Yo’s. Traveling because this is the perfect project to carry with you when you have to hurry up and wait. Cut the circles ahead of time and add scissors, threaded needles and your yo-yo maker (I use Clover).  Spoil yourself and purchase a pair of Karen Kay Baily scissors.

Taaa Daaa!! It’s magic. I make them in four different sizes, out of solids, stripes, silks, whatever will snap into the disk.

Finally, battery recharged, proper color. Another fabulous Kaffe Fassett fabric: “Roman Glass” color: sludge. I’m adding these yo-yo’s to my latest Coach purse. They will cover the sad, dirty (cleaned but still dirty looking) split leather. Check out that glue, it’s called Fabri-Tac. I LOVE, LOVE, this glue. It really holds, doesn’t run, and dries clear.

I placed a loose yo-yo on the little Coach tag. This is going to be the cutest little thing. Hurry up and dry, I want to take you out on the town.

Project #3: I found this large tote at Target. It was too plain for me. Using the stencil below with dark gray acrylic paint, I stenciled it onto the front of the tote bag.

To keep the paint on it, I have brushed on some Mod Podge. Love this stuff. Did you know that they make an outdoor Mod Podge? Hm…NO! Heidi! Finish these projects first, then you can go outside and find more.

Silly me, I am on “small” yo-yo mode, and have made a bunch of tiny ones. Well….I think they are too small for this large tote. No time left to make bigger ones, so I will just place these onto the tote so you get the idea.

Larger Yo-Yo’s will be better don’t you think? But I like what’s going on here.

Project #4: I love the fuchsia color of this Coach bag, but not the sad, ugly, split leather bottom. I’ll fix that!

Another great Kaffe Fassett fabric called Jungle Stripe is going to be used. I put some iron on fleece to the wrong side, stitched on the front following the striped pattern. Then stitched up a little “canoe” shaped piece. Snip, snip….trimming the excess away.

I glued it on with that fabulous glue, Fabri-Tac. I smeared on the glue all over the split leather, let it set up for about 5 minutes, slipped the quilted piece over the leather and smoothed it down with my fingers. I put extra pressure on the top edges. I have used this purse without any of it coming apart for 2 summers now. So glad I could give some more good years to this pretty colored Coach bag.

This is a recent view near Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe, the California side looking toward North Shore.  The lake is the fullest it has been in 11 years. Wow! Come and see it for yourself, come up and join our Artistic Alchemy retreat. My workshop is called “Pick a Pattern.” Let me help you custom fit, color and stylize your pick of patterns from the DesignsbyHeidi collection. Can’t wait. There’s still room. Click on the Artistic Alchemy logo below and learn more. You can always get in touch via my email: hmemmett@gmail.com

Stay cool. Thank you so much for stopping by. Hugs, Heidi

Did I get your attention? Fortunately I’m not black and blue, but the fabrics I’ve been working with are. And then I must mix in purple, blue and red violets too! Such yummy colors together. Read on….

In case you are new to my blog (welcome by the way and thank you for visiting), I have posted a few of these pictures of my Three Tiered Skirt Pattern in other colorways. Easy to make. It is  luscious in Colbalt Millefiori fabric by Kaffe Fassett. I wear it summer and winter too. dsc_0109-2

Remember this? Just a few posts ago. It is from my “Mommy & Me & My Vest & Quilt” pattern. And yes I said it was a P.I.P. (Project in Progress) that I had finished! finally! Well….dsc_0542I was working on those yo-yo’s. I can’t stop making them. I am playing with the layout on the vest above.

Lots of ways to add these to the vest.
dsc_0009 dsc_0010

I think I will add them in the way you see them below. Yes, there are yo-yos inside the yarn and beads. I will lay the yo-yo down and to hold it in place, I will machine felt it in place with yarn. Oh, don’t forget I’ll add beads too. The pictures below are from a “techniques” wall quilt where I try lots of new ideas I have sketched out. dsc_0010

Rats, what I thought was done(the vest)….less is more…well, I think more is more better!! dsc_0012

And yes, another P.I.P. in the black and blue arena is my circle crochet vest. This goes waaay back in the post archives (I really need to organize my 4 years worth of posts). In another post the same vest is in red yarns. I tend to buy yarns one skein at a time. I’m easily bored and like to switch often. Also, I buy different yarns for machine felting.

Love this black and blue, and red and blue violets swirling around. It will be done soon and I’ll post it with the red one along with the pattern. Fun, and easy to make.dsc_0497

I’m off to an Artistic Alchemy meeting! We are in middle of figuring out the whole program for September 2017. I really hope to see some of you in my workshop this fall. It will be Art to Wear with techniques sprinkled here and there to keep it exciting. Talk soon, and have fun creating something new and different this weekend. Hugs, Heidi
