What has Heidi Emmett been doing since The Artistic Alchemy Retreat at Lake Tahoe?

Fasten your seat belts everyone and I’ll show you! It has only been 7 weeks since the retreat at Zephyr Point and I have been busy, busy, since the day I came home!  Modern Patchwork has my Free-form Circles Pillow project in the latest edition. It just came out, Fall 2016. Get it NOW. Christine is in it too.
modern-patchwork-stories20160924_120337-1Drum roll please………I LOVE these pillows and they are super fun and easy to make.
20160924_120349-2The day after I finished all my projects for the book I wrote, yes, you heard it right, I WROTE A BOOK (yes, I’m shouting it out!!)! O.K., deep breath, Heidi was asked to write a book on my Quilted Wearables and accessories. People, quilted wearables/wearable Art is becoming a BIG deal! And I’m going to be a part of it. So excited and honored to write this for Leisure Arts. Look for it in Early Spring. O.K. where was I, oh yes, the day after I finished the book and sent everything off, I went to PIQF (Pacific International Quilt Festival) held in San Francisco area and picked up my first EVER!! sit down quilting machine by Handiquilter. It’s a Sweet Sixteen.
dsc_0674Feast your eyes on ALL THE ROOM I have (sorry, I’m yelling again, I’m so excited) to quilt a large Coat or Jacket, wallhanging, tote bag, and on, and on, I can quilt!
dsc_0678I had to get a new comfy chair. I can lean waaay back in it too. It is a Flintan from Ikea. And of course while I was there I checked out the fabric department that is buried in a corner of the drapery section. It was a feast of yummy fabrics. I bought a bunch for future wearable projects I have in mind.
dsc_0679Below is the very first project I will quilt on my Sweet Sixteen.
dsc_0661dsc_0653Terrific Tabard with a large scaled fabric as the start. Always take a picture of the fabrics you think you will use in any Art to wear project. Pictures help you see the other prints in new ways. I see a few that will have to go. dsc_0648This is a “Thank You” vest for a lovely lady(thank you Katie McCollum) who introduced me to Checker Distributors, the largest distributor in the U.S. They are now carrying my “hard copy” Art to Wear patterns. In fact, my Terrific Tabard, “Aussie Angle” is in the Checker booth this very week in Houston. So, my vest traveled to Houston, but not me. Maybe next year! Months of working on getting all the behind the scenes details ironed out to begin this new journey of hard copy sales in a big way. Finished the final details a week before the book was due. Ohh boy, not much sleep for me. dsc_0647

????????????????????????????????????

Oh, I taught a Rafiki Skirt class. This was crazy fun! You learn to create your perfectly fitted pattern using your measurements. It’s the African way of making a pattern.
dsc_0539Deciding on how the fabrics will look next to each other. dsc_0546

O.K. the skirts below ARE NOT FINISHED YET BUT WE RAN OUT OF TIME! So they don’t look so good in this pic. There I go, yelling again. That’s Terry (creator of Terial Magic) on the left and Trish Morris-Plisse on the right. This class was for “Jamboree” for the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Grass Valley, CA.

I also taught at the Mountain Star Quilt Retreat in Downieville, CA. Wow, what a lovely, gold rush town, and what lovely people that live there. I had such a fun time teaching.  bridge-and-carriage-houseI love this stone wall on one side of the town Museum. Many of the buildings, homes, and businesses were all built in the late 1800’s. stone-wallmuseumMy students worked on a Fun Fall Leaf Tablerunner or Center piece. I have many more pics I want to share on another post either here or on my own blog: Designsbyheidi.wordpress.comleavesThis project designed and created by me, first appeared in Stitch magazine fall, 2015 and Stitch E-book . All my students and I decided these leaves could easily be used in a quilt or even on a garment, hmm… did they mean a camouflage garment? KIDDING!leaf-centerpiecesilk-leavesorange-leaves

Phew, I’m exhausted but so happy. Creative and fun things are starting to happen for me. But I’m finally getting a weekend off and I will put myself in my new chair and quilt up a storm as big as the one we are having outside. We love the rain and it makes me cozy and happy to be inside quilting. Hugs, Heidi

So Much Going On, Sew Little Time!!

Accckk, Udi’s, Amy’s, Newmans’s Own, just to name a few, have been my foods, frozen no less, of choice during these whirlwind days. The Book is DONE, all projects, sent and received. Classes are being taught, Rafiki Skirt tomorrow, magazines are being sold with “Free-Form Circles pillow project (see a few posts back) and my first orders are already coming in from Checker Distributing!! And they haven’t even seen my patterns at Houston yet! And I was able to go to PIQF (Pacific International Quilt Festival) in San Francisco last Saturday. Wow, wow. What fun, what amazing things I saw, touched, and purchased. More later about THAT day.

????????????????????????????????????
I went to a lunch meeting and decided it was the perfect time to wear one of my Zephyr Jackets. Light weight and great for a warmish fall day. I have big smiles because of several things: 1. yes, you see my metal mouth. Things are progressing nicely so I am happy about that. 2. During the lunch meeting I was offered 2 part time positions, both of which could really boost my business forward (more later) . 3. A really big Trunk Show/Workshop class down south with my friend and co-quilter, Christine Barnes. All this stuff coming at me all at once and ALL fun. God is Good.
????????????????????????????????????
I wasn’t sure about the green sweater underneath, but I like it on me. For a sleek look wear a tighter fitting long or short sleeved t-shirt.
????????????????????????????????????
Zephyr Jacket, the front panels are a perfect canvas for embroidery, quilting, felting, etc. I can’t wait for some “sew” time. I have new ideas for this pattern.

????????????????????????????????????

I had just emptied the rain gauge, SIX INCHES of RAIN in a weekend of storms. Yeah, our first measurable rain since early April. I love the colors of the leaves with the sun shining through. Below is Rex wanting to join in on the picture taking fun.

Below, the back of Zephyr is plain, and can easily be lengthened. My next one will be longer.

Cardiac stitching on the shoulder seams for something different.

I’m Writing a Book!!! For Leisure Arts!

It has been a CrAzY BUSY time for me. Did I tell you that “I’m Writing a Book?” For Leisure Arts. It’s going to be about my Wearable Art which includes Accessories! Everything is DUE TODAY!  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, all the projects in this book. God sent a special Angel to guide me in what I have created. I can’t WAIT to show you the book. Spring 2017 introduction at Quilt Market! dsc_0368

The beginning of a project.

dsc_0679

Sunflowers. Taking time to “photo” the flowers. Is it REALLY fall alread? When did THAT happen?
dsc_0712

I pile fabrics and take pictures. This helps me decide what to use or not in a project for the book. Did I use all these fabrics? Hmmmm… we’ll see. dsc_0672

Silly Rubix, resting his back legs on a post as I was taking pictures of my sunflowers. And yes, that is our “Shabby Chic” fence. I said, “you build the picket fence honey and I will keep it painted.” Ha, ha, ha, that was one of the funniest things I ever said. Oh, and  check out the flowers behind Rubix. I planted the seeds of those sunflowers in late June. They were supposed to be the typical GIANT dinner plate sized Sunflowers that I have planted many times in the past. Probably small, from neglect, poor things. All attention was focused on the book for Leisure Arts, the retreat at Tahoe, the patterns readied for Checker Distribution, oh, and life in general.

dsc_0644

Whaaat? Another proto-type for one of the projects. It’s soooo cute! Wait until you see it.

O.K. I’ve got to dash and pack my projects, say a prayer for their safe arrival to Leisure Arts, and trust that everyone, including you, will want to stitch up my designs! Thanks for visiting my blog today, and I so appreciate everyone’s encouragement! That’s what keeps me going!   Hugs, Heidi

In Honor of Sparky!

Our sweet, sweet Sparky dog. We rescued you at age 4 and you were with us for 14 1/2 more years. We miss you! I’m naming my next pattern after you!!
dsc_0568

I took all these pictures a few years ago and Sparky was always there, our little “velcro” dog. “Whatcha doin? Does it involve treats? Let’s go on a walk, I need a new bone to chew on.” dsc_0543

Two more shots later on with brighter light, very true to color. And if you are having trouble finding Kaffe Stripes, this is my HOT TIP for the day, visit Flying Bulldogs at Ebay or Etsy.
